Popular social media platform, Facebook announced on their blog earlier this week that they are testing a new tool that lets users move photos and videos between it’s platform to others. While it’s currently in the initial testing phase in Ireland where is will be tweaked based on user feedback, it’s due to roll out globally in 2020. To start, Facebook is teaming up with Google Photos, with plans to roll out the tool to connect with other platforms in the months to follow.

So what's the deal?

This new tool is part of the Data Transfer Project, which is an initiative created by Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Microsoft with the goal of making it easier to transfer data between online a services. Not only will this tool make it easier to move data from one platform to another for personal use, but it will make the lives of social marketers everywhere much easier as well. It will allow bulk transfer media, as opposed to the tedious one-by-one manual save and upload process it currently offers. This will seriously cut down on the time and energy used to transfer media, along with making it easier to organize and archive them between the different channels.

Worried about privacy issues? Facebook plans to protect users’ privacy by using encryption and password authorization in order to use their media transfer process.
